Problem

Snapshot provider error (0xE000851C): Cache files required for the Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP) snapshot could not be created. Check that there is at least 50 MB of free disk space, and review the settings for the snapshot that are reported in the job log. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

Error

Snapshot provider error (0xE000851C): Cache files required for the VERITAS Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP) snapshot could not be created. Check that there is at least 50 MB of free disk space, and review the settings for the snapshot that are reported in the job log.

Solution

Figure 1 shows the error message.

Figure 1

This issue can occur when Use Default is shown in the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) Wizard on a machine with not enough free space.

Backup Exec (tm) 10.x creates a new cache file for each volume on the server selected in a backup job. For example, if there is a C:, D:, and E: drive on the server and all three are selected in a backup job, Backup Exec will create three AOFO cache files at the same time. If there is not sufficient space on the system to accommodate all three cache files, the initialization process will fail with the message shown above.

In this case, additional hard disk space can be added to the server to accommodate the cache files or the following steps can be performed to create separate cache files for each drive being backed up:
1. For Backup Exec 9.x, change the value of the registry key HKLM | Software | Veritas | Backup Exec | Engine | Backup | DoSingleVolumeSnap from 0 to 1
2. For Backup Exec 10.x, in the backup job properties, select Process logical volumes for backup one at a time under Settings | Advanced Open File

In addition, the following change is necessary to allow Backup Exec to create its cache file on a specific volume and therefore allow backups to complete successfully:
1. Run the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) Wizard from Tools | Wizards | Advanced Open File Option
2. Connect to the machine reporting the AOFO error
3. Clear the check box for Use Default
4. Type in a volume with the most free space, example: D:\
5. Click Next and then click Finish

This error can also occur if the static volume location is on a mapped drive (Figure 2).

Make sure that the static volume location is a locally attached physical drive.
