Physical and logical disk counters no longer visible in the Performance Monitor (Perfmon)

Solution

When trying to monitor disks using the Windows 2000 native performance monitor, occasionally the physical and/or logical Disk counters will not be visible. These counters are not enabled by default.

  • The first solution to this issue is to run diskperf -y from a command prompt and reboot.  This will enable the counters.

  • If the counters are still not visible, and the server is running Volume Manager 3.1, be sure that Hotfix04 is applied to Volume Manager. This hotfix contains fixes for this issue. To download this hotfix, see the link below in the Related Documents section.

  • If Hotfix04 has been applied to a Volume Manager 3.1 server, or if the server is running VERITAS Storage Foundation (tm) for Windows, the issue might be related to a known Microsoft issue with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. If there are large numbers of disks presented to a server (more than 25) and SP4 is applied, these counters could become disabled. Microsoft discusses this issue in KB article 828603 available at  http://support.microsoft.com . There is a fix available from Microsoft for this issue.
