DOCUMENTATION: How to change the Media ID Generation Rule to use the first six characters of the barcode versus the last six

Solution

How to change the Media ID Generation Rule to use the first six characters of the barcode versus the last six:

WARNING:

Changing the Media ID Generation Rule when there are existing images written to tape will have a global impact on your environment. All active tapes will have to be expired, erased, re-labled, deleted and re-inventoried; When restoring from a previous Media Generation ID, the new Rule will have to be removed while the restore is taking place and then replaced after the restore. When Netbackup loads a tape into a drive it reads the Media ID written on the tape and then compares it to the Media ID Generation rule. All media which has been written to prior to changing the Media Generation rule will be frozen, as the Media ID on the tape and the Media ID Generation Rule no longer match!

1. Open the NetBackup Administration console, right-click Media in the left window, and select Inventory Robot (see Figure 1).

2. Under Select Robots, make sure that the Device Host and Robots fields are correct, then click the Advanced Options button. If the Advanced Options button is grayed out, you may need to select the option Update Volume Configuration first.

3. Select the Media ID Generation Rule tab and click New. The following dialog box appears (see Figure 2):

4. Verify that the Robot number setting is correct and set the Barcode Length to the actual length of the barcode. For example, if one of the barcodes is FNG888GA, enter 8 for  the Barcode Length.

5. Set the Media ID generation rule to 1:2:3:4:5:6. This setting instructs NetBackup to generate Media IDs based on the first six characters of the barcode. Previous to this rule, the barcode FNG888GA would have been read and entered into the VolDB as G888GA. After the rule, the barcode would be FNG888.
