How to change
the Media ID Generation Rule to use the first six characters of the barcode
versus the last six:
1. Open the
NetBackup Administration console, right-click Media in the left window,
and select Inventory Robot (see Figure 1).

2. Under Select Robots, make sure that the Device Host and Robots fields are correct, then click the Advanced Options button. If the Advanced Options button is grayed out, you may need to select the option Update Volume Configuration first.
3. Select the Media ID Generation Rule tab and click New. The following dialog box appears (see Figure 2):

4. Verify that the Robot number setting is correct and set the Barcode Length to the actual length of the barcode. For example, if one of the barcodes is FNG888GA, enter 8 for the Barcode Length.
5. Set the Media ID generation rule to 1:2:3:4:5:6. This setting instructs NetBackup to generate Media IDs based on the first six characters of the barcode. Previous to this rule, the barcode FNG888GA would have been read and entered into the VolDB as G888GA. After the rule, the barcode would be FNG888.
