Forward slash in username field causes target agent to crash

Issue



When attempting to remote control a machine, authentication appears to fail as the user continuously is prompted for credentials. If the connection is canceled or the login attempts have been exceeded, and another connection attempt is made, the following error is generated:  "Status: Remote system did not respond or Login has timed out..". Further investigation shows that the target's "Altiris Carbon Copy" service is no longer running.

Cause



This symptom may occur if the user initiating the connection has entered a forward slash in the "Login name:" authentication field.

Example:  "domain/user"

The Carbon Copy Agent is unable to properly interpret the invalid syntax and may fail entirely.


Solution



A forward slash used to enter credentials is invalid. You must use the proper syntax which includes a backslash.

Example:  "domain\user"
