GENERAL ERROR: When creating a Windows SRT "Error: Failed copying required NetBackup File Set." is displayed and the error "Failed to retrieve destination for INSTALLDIR\SSM.exe from nbufiles.ini" shows up in the /var/bmr/log/messages log and in the Application Event log in Event Viewer

Error

Displayed:
Error: Failed copying required NetBackup File Set.

/var/bmr/log/messages log:
Failed to retrieve destination for INSTALLDIR\SSM.exe from nbufiles.ini

Solution

OVERVIEW:
These errors occur when trying to create a Shared Resource Tree (SRT) from a Windows system where NetBackup 5.0 or 5.1 has been installed with a custom installation with the feature "VERITAS SnapShot Provider" NOT selected. When NetBackup is installed without VSP the SSM.exe file will not be installed. This file is listed in BMR's nbufiles.ini which lists files to copy for the SRT creation.

Troubleshooting: Verify that the SSM.exe file does not exist in <install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\ on the client used to create the SRT.

RESOLUTION:
There are 2 solutions to fix this problem, do one of the following:
1.  Since the SSM.EXE file is never executed during a restore, this file can be safely created as an empty (zero length) file with this name residing in the <i install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\ directory.
2.  Edit /var/bmr/xfer/nbufiles.ini and remove the line under the [NBU5.0] stanza (same stanza is used for 5.1 as well) which reads:
INSTALLDIR\SSM.exe="NBU\SSM.exe"^M
After this line is removed, save the file and SRTs can then be created without this error occurring.
