How to enable and configure robust logging in Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0

Solution

Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0 introduces two new concepts in logging: Veritas Unified Logging (VxUL) and Robust Logging.  Robust logging is a method of management that assists in keeping the volume of legacy logs under control on NetBackup 6.0 machines.  It allows users to configure the maximum number of rotating log files a robust logging directory can contain and also the size of each file.  Robust logging affects logs for only the following processes:  bprd, bpbkar, bpbrm, bpdbm, bptm and bpdm.  No other logs use robust logging.

Configuration settings for robust logging use the vxlogcfg command and the nblog.conf file just as Unified logging does.  The originator ID for robust logging is 112.  There are only two configuration parameters that affect robust logging.  MaxLogFileSizeKB sets the size, in kilobytes (KB), that robust log file will reach before it is rotated to the next log file.  The default is 500000KB, or 500 megabytes (MB).  NumberOfLogFiles sets the number of log files that will be rotated in each robust logging directory.  The default is 3.  For complete details on Robust Logging, refer to the VERITAS NetBackup 6.0 Troubleshooting Guide for Windows and UNIX.

To enable Robust Logging and Change Configuration Parameters:
1. From the NetBackup Administration Console, open the Properties for the Master Server.
2. Inside the Master Server Properties, open the Logging window.
3. Select the Enable Robust Logging check box.  Click Apply and then OK.
4. A dialog box will appear, informing you that all NetBackup services or daemons, and all operations, including the NetBackup Administration Console, should be stopped and restarted in order to make these changes effective.  Click OK to continue.
5. Close the NetBackup Administration Console.
6. Inside a UNIX console window change into the /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies directory, or from a Windows command prompt change into the <installpath>\netbackup\bin\goodies directory.
7. Run the command netbackup stop to stop all NetBackup services or daemons.
8. Once all services or daemons have stopped, run the command netbackup start to restart them.  (Windows services can alternatively be stopped and restarted from the Control Panel.)
9. Change directories into the netbackup/bin directory.
10. To change the log file size to 100MB, run the following command:
vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o 112 -s MaxLogFileSizeKB=100000
11. To change the number of log files in each directory to 5, run the following command:
vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o 112 -s NumberOfLogFiles=5

Click the Download Now link below to see a short tutorial of how to enable Robust Logging and configure its two settings.  This tutorial contains an audio track.  The tutorial was recorded in UNIX, but the NetBackup commands are the same for both Windows and UNIX.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE OPENING THE TUTORIAL: In the Internet Explorer window, click the red 'X' to stop loading, then press the F5 key to refresh the screen.  This should allow the tutorial to load.

Please Notes:  The attached tutorial is an .SWF file that requires the Macromedia Flash Player.  If this application is not loaded on your computer, it can be downloaded from:    http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ .
