How to create and configure a Disk Storage Unit with Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0

Solution

Creation of Disk Storage Units in NetBackup 6.0 is still very similar to previous versions, but there are additional properties that are configured upon creation.  These include:
  • the High Water Mark  value.  This value is a capacity level for a Disk Storage Unit at which, upon being reached, the NetBackup administrator is notified.  In other words, with the default High Water Mark of 98%, once the Disk Storage Unit reaches 98% of its capacity, the administrator is notified.
  • the This directory can exist on the root file system or system disk option.  When a Disk Storage Unit is created, if this option is not checked, users will not be able to place the Disk Storage Unit on the root file system on Unix or system disk on Windows.
  • users have the ability to directly create a Disk Staging Storage Unit (DSSU) when creating a Disk Storage Unit, and assign it to a Disk Staging Schedule.

TO CREATE A DISK STORAGE UNIT AND CHANGE THE HIGH WATER MARK
1. From the NetBackup Administration Console, select the Storage Units option.
2. From the dropdown menus, choose Actions...New...Storage Unit.  The New Storage Unit window will open.
3. In the Storage Unit Name box, enter an appropriate, descriptive storage unit name.
4. Open the Storage Unit Type and select Disk.  Notice that On Demand Only is automatically selected.
5. Click in the Absolute pathname to directory box and enter a directory name.
6. Click the Properties box to verify there is sufficient Storage Available.
7. The default High Water Mark is 98%.  Change this to 95% using the down error next to the current value.
8. Close the New Storage Unit window.

TO CHANGE THE HIGH WATER MARK FOR AN EXISTING DISK STORAGE UNIT
1. In the Storage Units option of the NetBackup Administration Console, right-click on the storage unit.
2. From the Disk Storage Unit's pulldown menu, choose Change.
3. In the Change Storage Unit window, highlight the current High Water Mark.
4. Type in the new High Water Mark value you wish to set.
5. Click any other portion of the window to make sure the  value is set correctly.
6. Close the Change Storage Unit window by clicking OK.

Click the Download Now link below to see a short tutorial of this process for creating and configuring Disk Storage Units.  This tutorial contains an audio track.  The tutorial was recorded in UNIX, but the NetBackup commands are the same for both Windows and UNIX.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE OPENING THE TUTORIAL: In the Internet Explorer window, click the red 'X' to stop loading, then press the F5 key to refresh the screen.  This should allow the tutorial to load.

PLEASE NOTE: The attached tutorial is an .SWF file that requires the Macromedia Flash Player.  If this application is not loaded on your computer, it can be downloaded from
