Error

The licensed features for this system do not permit the use of a remote master server
licensed use has been exceeded (159)

Solution

Overview:
A message stating "The licensed features for this system do not permit the use of a remote master server " occurs on backups performed by a remote media server.

Troubleshooting:

Execute the following command on the media server in question to view its licenses:

<install_path>\NetBackup\bin\admincmd\bpminlicense -verbose

Note the output. If the license is for NetBackup Server and not NetBackup Enterprise Server, this is the cause (Figure 1).  NetBackup Server licenses do not support remote media servers. NetBackup Server licenses are for single master/media environments.

Figure 1.  A NetBackup Server license is being used for a remote media server when it should be NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Media Server Log Files:  N/A

Client Log Files:  N/A

Resolution:
Ensure that a NetBackup Enterprise Server license key is applied to the remote media server, not a NetBackup Server license. This can be managed through Help | License Keys from an Administration Console that is connected to the media server.
