How to install Veritas Storage Exec (tm) 5.3 Hotfix 14 (or later) on a Microsoft Cluster Server

Solution

This process needs to be performed only one time per the Storage Exec 5.3 server

If the Storage Exec 5.3 server is at the base installation or any hotfix level prior to Hotfix 14,  then updating to Storage Exec 5.3 Hotfix 14 or greater requires the process as described in this TechNote.
If the Storage Exec 5.3 server is at Hotfix 14 or any hotfix level greater than Hotfix 14 and this process has already been performed, it is not necessary to perform this process again for subsequent hotfixes.

How to determine if a Storage Exec 5.3 server is at a hotfix level prior to Hotfix 14 or is at a Hotfix 14 level or greater

1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to the \Windows\System32\drivers directory (\Winnt\System32\drivers)
2. Locate FileScreenFilter.sys
3. Right click FileScreenFilter.sys and select Properties
4. In the Properties window select the Version tab
If the version is 5.3.2190.14 or greater,  then Storage Exec has been updated to Hotfix 14 or later.
If the version is 5.3.2190.2 or lower,  then Storage Exec has not been updated to Hotfix 14 or later.

How to prepare a Storage Exec 5.3 Server for the initial installation of Hotfix 14 or greater

1. Break the Storage Exec cluster, open the Storage Exec Administration Console and select the link "Configuring Storage Exec for a clustered environment" on the right hand pane (Figure 1)

The Storage Exec Cluster Configuration Wizard appears (Figure 2), click Next

Select the third option to remove the Storage Exec resource from all groups and click Next (Figure 3)

Answer Yes to the prompt (Figure 4)

Upon clicking Yes as in Figure 4, the wizard will remove the Storage Exec cluster resources in the selected cluster groups. Once the wizard completes,  click the Finish button (Figure 5)

2. Clean up the folders Storage Exec creates on the clustered drives
Note: Storage Exec creates a folder called WQSC5RES on each share disk that had been selected for management by Storage Exec. Typically, the Storage Exec cluster wizard will remove this folder from each shared disk. If this folder still resides on any shared disks after running the Storage Exec Cluster Wizard to remove the shared disks from management by Storage Exec,  then those folders should be manually removed. They can be deleted or renamed, either option will be sufficient.

3. Install Hotfix 14 (or later)  on each node in the cluster and reboot (see the Related Documents section below for links to Storage Exec hotfixes)

4. Run the Storage Exec cluster wizard to select the shared disks that will be managed by Storage Exec. Steps to complete the wizard can be found in TechNote:  http://support.veritas.com/docs/274493
