Pre-installation task for Enterprise Vault (tm) when using Network Appliance storage products.

Solution

THE FOLLOWING MUST BE PERFORMED BEFORE ADDING THE NETWORK APPLIANCE (NetApp) SERVER TO BE ARCHIVED, TO THE FILE SERVER TARGETS.

There is an application program interface (API) feature not included with Network Appliance OnTap 7.0 release, that prevents Enterprise Vault (EV) from working correctly with Network Appliance MultiStore (Vfiler) systems.  OnTap is the internal software code that resides in Network Appliance storage products that controls how the device works.

The following commands replace the API feature not included in the current release of OnTap 7.0.

Enterprise Vault only support Vfilers with CIFS based volumes that use NTFS security.

You must be logged in with full administrative privileges, either to the system console or via telnet on their MultiStore (Vfiler).

1. Manually create the FPolicy on the Vfiler using the following version specific commands:

For VERITAS Enterprise Vault 5 SP3 - 6.0 (builds 5834 - 7400):

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy create veritas.com-placeholder screen

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy enable veritas.com-placeholder

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy options veritas.com-placeholder required on

For VERITAS Enterprise Vault 6 Service Pack 1 (build 7637) and above:

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy create ev-placeholder screen

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy enable ev-placeholder

Vfiler run <vfilername> fpolicy options ev-placeholder required on

If the Network Appliance is configured for UNIX, enter the following command replacing %1% with the root volume name:

qtree security /vol/%1% ntfs

Note: Enterprise Vault does not currently support placeholders on Vfilers for UNIX/NFS clients. Customers who are unable to enable qtree security NTFS mode on their UNIX volume are not supported at the present time. If you require UNIX/NFS client support please enter an enhancement request at:    http://enhancement.symantec.com

2. Explicitly add the Enterprise Vault server aliases to the local intranet Sites on each Enterprise Vault server.

3. You can now continue to configure Enterprise Vault as follows:

Version 6.0: In the Admin Console expand the Site & Archiving Targets. Right click on File Servers & select New - File Server. Add the NetApp server to be archived.

Version 5.0:  In the Admin Console expand the Site, then right click on File Server. Select New then File Server. Add the NetApp server to be archived.
