Symantec Endpoint Protection install fails with error 1063

Error

 error code 1063

Environment

NS 7 SP2

Install Job contains the following Steps:

- Check if an anti-virus is installed

- Remove the current anti-virus

- Install Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP)

Cause

Windows installer requires  a system restart in order to write registry changes after an anti-virus uninstall. As no reboot is scheduled, Install of SEP does not complete and fails with error 1063 operation failed (generic message) error message

Solution

Recommended solution:

Include a task after the current anti-virus uninstall that will instructs the target machine to reboot. The task will be paused on the server side. At next reboot the client task agent will automatically check for new task and complete what is left to be performed

Alternate Solution:

In the script that uninstalls the current anti-virus, modify the script to force a reboot using an Msi switch such as:

msiexec "msi package" /forcerestart
