Adding disks to a coordinator disk group is not allowed when the attribute coordinator is set to on.

Solution

In Veritas Storage Foundation (tm) for Oracle/RAC 5.0, a coordinator disk group is protected with a disk group attribute "coordinator". When this attribute is set to on, no disks can be added or removed from the disk group. Therefore, the recommended way to create the coordinator disk group is as following:

vxdg init -o coordinator=on vxfencoorddg <disk1> <disk2> <disk3>

There are situations where adding or removing disks to the coordinator disk group becomes necessary, for example, if the coordinator disk group is created with only one disk and users wish to add two more disks,  or if one or more of the disks in the coordinator disk group have gone bad Then those disks need to be replaced.

The following procedure can be used to change the disks in the coordinator disk group:
Note: These steps should be performed when fencing is not running.

1. Turn off the "coordinator" attribute:

vxdg -g vxfencoorddg set coordinator=off

2. Add or remove disks as necessary:

vxdg -g vxfencoorddg rmdisk <disk2>
vxdg -g vxfencoorddg rmdisk <disk3>
or
vxdg -g vxfencoorddg adddisk <disk2>
vxdg -g vxfencoorddg adddisk <disk3>

3. Be sure to turn the "coordinator" attribute back on:

vxdg -g vxfencoorddg set coordinator=on
