Problem
Enterprise Vault buttons disappear from the Outlook Web Access (OWA) toolbar after a Microsoft Exchange 2003 update / hotfix installation.
Solution
In this document "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\" is assumed
to be the Exchange installation directory.
Enterprise Vault Exchange 2003 Back-end / Front-end Extensions installation changes some files in the directory C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\exchweb\6.5.xxxx.xx\controls.
EV 6.0 SP1 and SP2 can currently install the needed files in the following directories:
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\exchweb\6.5.6944.0\controls (Exchange 2003 NO SP)
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\exchweb\6.5.7226.0\controls (Exchange 2003 SP1)
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\exchweb\6.5.7638.1\controls (Exchange 2003 SP2)
When Enterprise Vault Exchange 2003 Back-end / Front-end Extensions installation changes the files in these directories, it makes a copy of the original files in the "Controls-originals copied by Enterprise Vault" directory inside the 6.5.xxxx.xx folder.
Some Exchange security patches, updates, and hotfixes create new versions of the 6.5.xxxx.xx directories.
For example:
MS 883543 creates the 6.5.7232.22 or 6.5.7232.34 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP1).
(The S/MIME control does not load in OWA when you are running the Exchange Server 2003 OWA client on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883543 )
MS 888619 creates the 6.5.7233.28 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP1).
(The value for the PR_ACCESS property that is returned from the DAV PROPFIND method is always read-only in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888619 )
MS 902072 creates the 6.5.7651.9 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP2).

(You cannot
send a digitally-signed e-mail attachment by using Outlook Web Access from a
computer on which S/MIME is
installed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902072
)
MS 911829 creates the 6.5.7651.25 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP2).
(You receive an error message when you try to perform any editing tasks, or you must click to enable the compose frame in Outlook Web Access http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911829 )
MS 924334 creates the 6.5.7651.43 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP2).
(The Compose Message form stops responding after you install Internet Explorer 7.0 and the S/MIME control on an Outlook Web Access client in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924334 )
New versions of MS 911829 and MS 924334 (these hotfixes have been updated in November 2006) create the 6.5.7651.60 directory (updates Exchange 2003 SP2).
The Enterprise Vault Exchange 2003 Back-end / Front-end Extensions installation (version 6.0 SP1 and SP2) do not recognize these new directories and cannot complete the files substitution.
The solution to this issue is to uninstall the Microsoft update / hotfix, and reinstall the Enterprise Vault Exchange 2003 Back-end / Front-end Extensions.
EV 6.0 SP3 supports the following controls directory versions:
6.5.7226.0
6.5.7638.1
6.5.7651.9
6.5.7651.25
Note: If
the Exchange server has the 6.5.7651.43 controls directory version there
is an Enterprise Vault hotfix available that will allow the Enterprise Vault
Exchange 2003 Back-end / Front-end Extensions installation to change the files
in the controls directory. For more information please refer to
