Problem
File Size Limits for Enterprise Vault (EV) for File System Archiving (FSA)
Solution
EV for FSA has
various limits on the size of a file that can be archived or restored after
being archived.
The various
methods are explained in detail below:
1. File size
limit - EV for FSA from file servers
Prior to EV 5.0
Service Pack 3 (SP3), it was not possible to archive files larger than 50 MB
(the absolute maximum was 200 MB, which was done by adding a setting in the
EvFileArcSvr.exe.config file).
With EV 5.0 SP3
or later, it is possible to archive very large files. By default, this is a file
that is 50 MB or larger and there should be no maximum size of items that can be
archived. In order to do this, FSA now treats large files differently from
normal files:
- When archiving to New Technology File System (NTFS) devices, large files are archived as a small .DVS file (approx 3KB) and an associated .DVF file. (the DVF file contains the actual archived item.)
- Very large files, stored in NTFS partitions, will not be shared or compressed, their contents will not be indexed and no hyper text markup language (HTML) preview will be generated.
- Very large files will not be collected into NTFS Collections (Cab files).
- Very large files can be stored in Centera partitions and can be shared by the Centera.
- When storing to Centera very large files will be stored in a single Saveset Clip; and cannot be collected and stored in a Collection Clip.
- When archiving to Centera partitions, there is currently a maximum file size of 2 GB. Files larger than 2GB are not archived, due to a limitation with the Centera software.
2. Search
results and restores for EV for FSA
- A user cannot restore a large file (any item that is greater then 50 MB will be treated as a large file) to a mailbox or personal information store (PST) file, or place it into a shopping basket.
- A user cannot view an HTML preview of a large file but can open the whole file. If a user attempts to view an HTML preview, there is a message indicating that the file is too big to be displayed and indicating the action to take.
- Large files can be restored using placeholder shortcuts or Archive Explorer. There is no maximum size imposed.
