When backing up the System State of a remote IA64 system with Active Directory, the backup fails with the following error

Error

Error 2 :

Final error: 0xe0001201 - For this operation, the Backup Exec Virtual File Filter (VFF) driver must be installed on the Backup Exec server.  The VFF driver is installed when you install any of the following Backup Exec agents or options:

Exchange Agent
Active Directory Recover Option
VMware Virtual Infrastructure Agent
Microsoft Virtual Server Agent

Solution

The Backup Exec Virtual File Filter (VFF) drivers are installed only if the Active Directory Recovery Agent (ADRA) or the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange is selected for installation.

The error does not occur if "Enable the restore of individual objects from Active Directory backups" is unchecked from the Active Directory page of the Backup Job Properties window: (Figure 2)

Figure 2

Following steps could be applied to resolve this issue:

Solution 1:
 1. Install the appropriate agent ( Active Directory Recovery Agent or the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange) for backups.

2. Restart the media server

If the backup job still fails with the above error:

1. Remove the license for Active Directory Recovery Agent or Exchange Agent from the media server

2. Restart the server

3. Install the license for Active Directory Recovery Agent or Exchange Agent on the media server

4. Restart the server

Solution 2:

1. Copy VirtFile.sys, VirtFile.inf and VirtApi.dll files from any other Backup Exec media server to root to this Media server
(make sure its running same version and update level)

2. Right click virtfile.inf and hit install

3. Restart Backup Exec services.

Solution 3:
Run repair install of Backup Exec and then confirm using FLTMC Command, Virtual Driver is installed.
