Enterprise Vault for Microsoft Exchange may experience out of disk space situation even though automatic deletion of Enterprise Vault collections is enabled.

Solution

The Enterprise Vault Storage Service automatically deletes items from archives when their Retention Periods expire. Deletions from the Enterprise store or collection directory may not occur if  an "Anti-Virus" software program is configured to scan the vault store and the collection directory.  The files may be locked by the Anti-Virus program and the files may not be deleted by Enterprise Vault. A massive amount of disk space may be consumed because the files have not been deleted.

Resolution:

It is recommended to configure the Anti-Virus program to exclude the collection files/folders from being scanned.

The collection area can be identified by using the following procedure:

1. Open the "Vault Administrative Console"

2. Expand "Vault Stores"

3. Click on the vault store that contains the partitions that are configured for collections.

4. In the right pane double-click on the partition.

5. Click on the "Collections" tab.

6. Record the information in the "Location of temporary files" box.

7. Exclude the recorded location from being scanned in the Anti-Virus program.

The vault store storage area be identified by using the following procedure. This procedure should only be completed for NTFS type partitions and several NTFS partitions may exist.

1. Open the "Vault Administrative Console"

2. Expand "Vault Stores"

3. Click on the vault store that contains partitions.

4. In the right pane double-click on the partition.

5. In the "Details" frame record the "Location" information.

6. Exclude the recorded location from being scanned in the Anti-Virus program.
