When attempting to connect to a remote 64 bit server via the Advanced Open File Option Wizard, an error pops up stating "The Advanced Open File Option does not appear to be installed correctly"

Solution

When attempting to connect to the registry of the remote 64 bit server using the regedit from a 32 bit Media server,  the HKLM\Software\Veritas key will not appear.

Any 32bit application (including regedit) attempting to connect to a remote 64 bit system should only be able to access the 32 bit portions of the registry, by operating system design. For more information,  please refer to Microsoft KB: 895155

When the Advanced Open File Option is launched and the remote server is selected it connects to the registry of the remote server and makes the changes to it as per the options specified in the wizard. Since the 64 bit portion of the remote registry cannot be connected via the 32 bit Media server this error (Figure 1) is displayed and does not allow modifications to the remote 64 bit server.

Workaround:

Modify the 64 bit registry on the remote server manually.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows Registry Editor can have disastrous results on a server Operating System. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows Registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the Registry Editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes
