DOCUMENTATION: How to configure NetBackup 5.x Non-Failover Media servers with virtual storage unit in EMM after upgrading them to NetBackup 6.0 or later.

Solution

Manual: Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0 Installation Guide for UNIX and Linux, Page: 33

Modification Type: Supplement.

Modification:
In NetBackup 5.x non-Failover media servers (i.e. cluster nodes acting as independent media servers) can include virtual storage units. A virtual storage unit is one where the storage unit hostname is associated with the virtual name of the application being protected in a cluster.

In NetBackup 6.x such non-Failover media servers with virtual storage units are referred to as Application Cluster and flagged in the Enterprise Media Manager (EMM) database with machine type app_cluster.

The app_cluster objects will not be created by the nbpushdata command. The following steps can be used to manually define app_cluster objects once the cluster nodes are upgraded to NetBackup 6.0 or later.

1. Run the following command to add a host with the virtual name of the application cluster:
nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename virtual_name -machinetype app_cluster
where virtual_name is the virtual name of the application.

2. Run the following command to associate the host with each node on which the application runs in the cluster:
nbemmcmd -updatehost -add_server_to_app_cluster -machinename node_name -machinetype media -clustername virtual_name -netbackupversion 6.0 -masterserver master_name
where node_name is a node on which the application can run, virtual_name is the virtual name of the cluster, and master_name is the name of the NetBackup master server.

3. Repeat step 2 for each node on which the application can run.

Make sure that the storage unit defined uses the virtual name as the storage unit host name after the upgrade.
