Symantec Backup Exec 11d Continuous Protection Server - Software Compatibility List (SCL)

Solution

Listed below are the available operating systems and platforms specifically tested by Symantec to be compatible with Backup Exec (tm) 11d for Windows Servers Continuous Protection Server.

Symantec provides best efforts to qualify Backup Exec with as many different operating systems, service packs, hardware platforms, database application service packs, and other applications as possible. However, due to the number of combinations, it is not possible to test all combinations for compatibility. If a particular service pack or version is not listed as specifically tested by Symantec, it may work fine, but has not been explicitly tested by Symantec with Backup Exec.

Please see  http://support.veritas.com/docs/286600 for compatibility information regarding Back Exec 11d for Windows Servers.
If a particular platform is not currently listed as being supported, a request for additions to this list can be made through the Symantec Product Enhancement Web site:    http://enhancement.veritas.com
Support is conditional according to the notes corresponding to the individual platform. See the Notes Reference section for details.

Continuous Protection Server (CPS\CMS) Operating System compatibility
Provides primary control of the Continuous Protection Server processes. The CMS maintains a database with all the command and control information, and configures the Protection Agents according to configuration settings sent from the Administration Console.

Note: Note that other database technologies, including Oracle, Microsoft SharePoint, SAP, or Lotus Domino, are not officially or directly supported by CPS natively. However, these databases and applications can be protected via the traditional Backup Exec for Windows Servers Agents for those databases. These database files can also be continuously protected if the databases are shutdown and off-line as regular files. Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services SQL databases can be protected via the same whitepaper for Microsoft SQL  http://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=36491

Notes Reference:

1) The Continuous Protection Server (version 11d or higher) can be used with Backup Exec 11d's Exchange Agent to backup Microsoft Exchange databases . Refer to the Backup Exec Administrator's Guide for additional information on continuously protecting Exchange Databases with the Backup Exec 11d Exchange Agent.

2) The Continuous Protection Server (version 11d or higher) can be used to backup Microsoft SQL Server databases. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 are supported by the Continuous Protection Server. For more detail on using CPS to protect SQL Server databases, refer to the white paper at  http://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=36491

3) When running on Windows Server 2003, the Protection Agent of CPS 10d is incompatible with email scanning features of some versions of Symantec (Norton) Antivirus software. Before installing the Continuous Protection Agent of CPS 11d, verify that you have Symantec 9.0.4 Upgrade (or newer). See also the following TechNote:    http://support.veritas.com/docs/271374

4) Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server is not compatible on the same system with Replication Exec 3.1 or earlier. However, Replication Exec customers using version 3.1 or higher can migrate to Continuous Protection Server.

5) Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server is compatible with Backup Exec for Windows Servers 11d. Backup Exec for Windows Servers 11d includes specific support for protecting Continuous Protection Server databases, snapshots, and the live replica data. It is also recommended that both the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) be upgraded to version 11d if the system will be protected by a Continuous Protection Agent (CPA). If an older version of RAWS is detected on a system during the installation of a CPA, an upgrade prompt will be displayed on screen to upgrade the RAWS version to 11d

6) Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server is not currently cluster aware using either MSCS from Microsoft or SFWHA (VCS) from Symantec. Continuous Protection Server and the Continuous Protection Agent will only view the server as a normal un-clustered standalone server   If the Continuous Protection Server or Continuous Protection Agent is installed on a clustered system it will not correctly failover as normal clustered application. Any currently running jobs will not automatically re-start on the failover node during a failover.

7) BESR cannot create a backup at the same time CPS is running.

8) CPS is not compatible with BESRM Indexer.
