Requirements for restoring individual objects and attributes using the Active Directory Recovery Agent (ADRA).

Solution

Following requirements must be met before restoring individual objects and attributes using the Active Directory Recovery Agent (ADRA):

1.  Although it is enabled by default, it should be verified that the option "Enable the restore of individual objects from Active Directory backups" is selected while creating the backup. This check box is located on the Microsoft Active Directory node of the Backup Job Properties dialog box. (Figure 1)

Individual attributes and properties can be restored from full Active Directory and ADAM backups only if this option is selected during backup. If this option is not enabled, it is not possible to  restore individual Active Directory objects and attributes. If the backup is disk based, the restore will take significantly less time than if the backup was to tape. Restoring from tape requires the creation of a temporary hard disk staging location where the data from tape is first copied. As such, a restore from tape will take more time since the entire backup set must be read in order to extract the selected attributes and properties.

Figure 1.

Note :
- To restore individual Active Directory or ADAM (Active Directory application mode) objects and attributes from tape to a 64-bit computer, it is necessary to move the tape to a media server that is running a 64-bit operating system.

- To use a backup-to-disk folder as the destination device for the full mode backup, the backup-to-disk folder must reside on a local NTFS volume.

2. It is necessary to have a full backup of the ADAM or the Windows System State (where Active Directory is installed).

3. You can only backup and restore individual objects and attributes on the computers which has any one of the following operating systems installed.

- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
- Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4.

ADRA does not support re-animation of objects from the Active Directory Deleted Objects container on a Windows 2000 domain controller. It is recommended that individual restores of deleted objects be done by a Backup Exec Remote Agent on a Windows 2003 domain controller, if one exists in the same domain. Deleted objects can only be restored using an agent on a Windows 2000 domain controller if the Recreate deleted object check box is checked.

- Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or later
- Windows Server 2003 R2

4. Restore job must be run on Backup Exec Media server with a version of the Windows operating system that supports mini filter drivers. Mini filter drivers are supported in the following Windows operating systems:

- Windows 2000 with both Service Pack 4 and the Windows 2000 Roll up Patch 1 installed
- Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or later installed.

5. Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers version must be running on the computer where Active Directory is installed.

6. To restore from tape it is necessary to designate a location on the media server disk where Backup Exec can temporarily place the objects and attributes that are being restored .
