How to determine if a failed Backup Exec hotfix installation is a LiveUpdate download failure or a hotfix installation failure.

Solution

Starting with Backup Exec for Windows Servers (BEWS) 11d it is possible to download and install a BEWS hotfix via Symantec LiveUpdate.

In general, LiveUpdate is a patch delivery system that will download and initiate the patch installation as seen below in figures 1 - 3.

Figure 1 shows LiveUpdate performing a patch download operation.

Figure 3 shows a completed LiveUpdate patch installation operation.

If a patch downloads successfully but fails to install, then the failure is most likely an installation failure; not a LiveUpdate failure.

Look in the Backup Exec installation log BKUPINST.HTM for information on why the patch failed to install.

BKUPINST.HTM is typically found in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs.

Search for the following text in the log to find the beginning of the patch installation (there will be multiple entries for this text if you tried to install the patch multiple times):

"Symantec Backup Exec (TM) 11 for Windows Servers Patch Log :"

"Symantec Backup Exec (TM) 12.0 for Windows Servers Patch Log :"

"Symantec Backup Exec (TM) 12.5 for Windows Servers Patch Log :"

Figure 4 shows an example of the header text as described above.

To determine the reason for failure scroll through the text following the header, examine the entries for success or failure and troubleshoot the failures appropriately.

Note: Each patch installation will overwrite the previous BKUPINST.HTM log, this behavior is by design. If there is a desire to preserve previous versions of the BKUPINST.HTM it should be renamed prior to running LiveUpdate.
