BACKGROUND
The Rule Manager feature changed significantly between the Storage Foundation 4.x  for Windows (SFW) releases and the SFW 5.x release. In SFW 5.x, Rule Manager can be accessed from the Veritas Enterprise Administrator (VEA) console by selecting the Control Panel in the Perspective Bar and then clicking on the actionagent node in the tree view.

The upgrade process from SFW 4.x to SFW 5.x does not automatically upgrade the rules created with the SFW 4.x versions of Rule Manager and these rules are not made available to SFW 5.x.

ABOUT THE VXAAMIGRATE UTILITY
The vxaamigrate utility migrates most rules created by SFW 4.x and makes them available in SFW 5.x. Rules that are migrated using this utility are given the prefix "SFW_4.x_".

Certain types of rules created by SFW 4.x cannot be migrated. These include the following:

- Rules where email notification is sent to a group
SFW 5.x does not support email notification to a group of recipients. However, SFW 5.x does support sending notification to a number of individual recipients. You can obtain similar results by setting up a rule in SFW 5.x to send notification to a number of email addresses.

- Rules with a notification schedule
SFW 5.x does not support notifications according to a specific schedule such as sending the alert only on weekends or only on Mondays.

- Rules based only on "Alert Classification"

DOWNLOADING AND RUNNING THE VXAAMIGRATE UTILITY
You download and run the vxaamigrate utility after upgrading SFW 4.x to SFW 5.x. Symantec recommends that you save the SFW 4.x Rule Manager database before the upgrade by copying it to a backup location of your choice.

The general procedure for using the utility is as follows:

1. Copy the SFW 4.x Rule Manager database to a backup location. The SFW 4.x Rule Manager database is located at \<ALLUSERSPROFILE>\Application Data\VERITAS\Providers\ActionProvider\db
2. Upgrade SFW 4.x to SFW 5.x
3. Launch SFW 5.x
4. Download vxaamigrate.zip from the Symantec Support site
5. Extract the contents of vxaamigrate.zip to <SFW 5.x Install Location>\VRTSaa\bin
6. At the Windows command line, navigate to vxaamigrate.exe and run the vxaamigrate utility to migrate the SFW 4.x rules to the SFW 5.x Rule Manager. The syntax of the vxaamigrate utility is
    vxaamigrate -d <SFW 4.x database location>

where the SFW 4.x database location is the SFW 4.x Rule Manager database. If the -d option is not specified, the utility searches the default location for the SFW 4.3 Rule Manager database. Symantec recommends that you use the -d option to specify the backup location of the database.

Example:
1. Copy the db directory to a backup location, such as C:\test\db. If SFW 4.3 was installed at the default location, the SFW 4.3 Rule Manager database is located at
 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VERITAS\Providers\ActionProvider\db. Copy the db directory to C:\test\db
2. Upgrade SFW 4.x to SFW 5.x
3. Launch SFW 5.x
4. Download vxaamigrate.zip file from the Symantec Support site
5. Extract the contents of vxaamigrate.zip to <SFW 5.x Install Location>\VRTSaa\bin
6. Navigate to vxaamigrate.exe and run the vxaamigrate utility specifying C:\test\db as follows:  vxaamigrate -d C:\test\db
In this case, the utility migrates the contents of C:\test\db to <ALLUSERSPROFILE>\Application Data\Veritas\VRTSaa\db.
The rules are now available to the SFW 5.x Rule Manager and each rule has the "SFW_4.x_" prefix. The utility output contains a message for each rule to indicate a successful or unsuccessful migration.

RECREATING RULES THAT ARE NOT MIGRATED
Any SFW 4.x rules that cannot be migrated to SFW 5.x may be entered into SFW 5.x manually using the Rule Manager GUI. These rules are identified in the output of the vxaamigrate utility with a "Cannot Migrate" message. You can locate the details of each rule by searching the xml files of the SFW 4.x Rule Manager database for the rule name. These details can guide you in setting up a new rule in the SFW 5.x Rule Manager.
