Modification Type: Addition

Modification:
The NetBackup 6.0 Maintenance Pack 5 (MP5) release will introduce a new command line -copy <num> option to the bprestore command.  This new option will allow the administrator to select a copy number to use for the restore.  Previous NetBackup releases could only use the primary copy for restores.  In situations where multiple copies exist for an image, but the primary copy is not readily available, this option can restore from an alternate copy.

In previous releases it was necessary to use the bpchangeprimary command to change the primary copy prior to running a restore.

The -copy option will only be available when running the bprestore command from the command line.  It will be necessary to create the ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER text file when restoring from an alternate copy using the NetBackup Administration console.

For UNIX systems:
To restore using the NetBackup Administration console:
1. Create the following text file.
/usr/openv/netbackup/ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER
2. Enter the copy number to use as a single line of text within this file.
3. Then restore from the Backup, Archive and Restore section of the NetBackup Administration console.
4. Once the restore is complete then move or rename the ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER file so the primary copy will be used for all future restores.

To restore via the command line run:
# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
# ./bprestore -s <start_date> -copy <num> /dir/to/restore
This will restore the /dir/to/restore directory using a specific backup copy instead of the primary copy. The start date should be old enough to include the most recent full backup of the directory.

For Windows systems:
To restore using the NetBackup Administration console:
1. Create the following text file.
<install_dir>\VERITAS\NetBackup\ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER

% cd <install_dir>\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin
% bprestore -s <start_date> -copy <num> C:\dir\to\restore
This will restore the C:\dir\to\restore directory using a specific backup copy instead of the primary copy. The start date should be old enough to include the most recent full backup of the directory.

Note: Be sure to remove or rename the ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER file once the restore has completed.  Failure to do this will result in the backup copy number listed in this file being used for all future restores.  This can result in failures when the copy number does not exist or is not available for restore.
