Solution

Description

This issue may occur if the following conditions are present::

- Microsoft Windows 2003 is installed
- NetBackup 6.0 Maintenance Pack 4 (MP4) is installed
- Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows
- Storage Foundation for Windows (SFW) 5.0 is installed
- A backup job that uses the Veritas Storage Foundation VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) provider is running on the affected computer

This problem is caused by an access violation in vxcmd.dll. As a result, a backup job that requires the use of the SFW VSS snapshot technology will fail. Some examples of the Symantec backup applications that use this technology are the NetBackup Advanced Client Backup and Alternate Client Backup features.

Solution

This issue has been identified and a private fix is available. To obtain the private fix, contact Symantec Enterprise Technical Support and reference this TechNote during the call. A support representative will be available to assist in troubleshooting this issue. If it is determined that the private fix addresses the problem, the support representative will further assist in obtaining the private fix. For a complete list of Veritas Technical Services contact numbers and information about support costs, go to    http://support.veritas.com.

To successfully perform a snapshot backup using the SFW VSS method, it is necessary to apply the hotfix on all systems that such snapshot backups will be performed. The hotfix can be obtained by calling Symantec Supports. This fix will also be included in the SFW/SFW-HA 5.0 MP1 (Maintenance Pack 1) release.
