Veritas NetBackup (tm) PureDisk Remote Office Edition 6.1 Maintenance Pack 1 (MP1A) - Symantec Corporation NB_PDE_61_MP1A_287416.tar
Solution
Name: NB_PDE_61_MP1A
Date: February 24, 2007
==============================================================================
This maintenance pack provides features and fixes to the Veritas NetBackup
PureDisk Remote Office Edition 6.1 software.
WARNING: Applying this maintenance pack stops and starts all PureDisk services.
This can cause running jobs to abort.
==============================================================================
=================
PACK DEPENDENCIES
=================
Install PureDisk 6.1.0.35 before you install this maintenance pack.
For instructions, see the PureDisk Remote Office Edition Getting Started Guide.
============
NEW FEATURES
============
NetBackup export engine
-----------------------
The PureDisk NetBackup export engine allows you to copy data from a PureDisk
content router to a NetBackup environment. When you export a backed-up Files
and Folders data selection from a PureDisk content router to NetBackup,
NetBackup catalogs the data and writes it to tape or disk in NetBackup's file
format. You can use these files for long-term data protection, and if you ever
delete the files from the original client or from PureDisk storage, you can
restore them from NetBackup.
After you export the PureDisk files to NetBackup, you can log into a NetBackup
administration console and treat these files as if they were native NetBackup
files. From the administration console, you can generate NetBackup reports,
browse the files, and manage the files.
If you want to use this feature, apply this maintenance pack to your PureDisk
6.1 system, add the PureDisk nbu service, and install a NetBackup client
6.0 MP5 on your PureDisk server node. This maintenance pack implements the
ability to add the PureDisk nbu service to a storage pool. The PureDisk
Remote Office Edition Administrator's Guide describes how to add the PureDisk
nbu service in the chapter called "Adding and removing components and services".
This feature enables you to export backed-up Puredisk Files and Folders data
selections to NetBackup. This feature does not work with other data
selection types. The NetBackup environment must be running
NetBackup 6.0 MP5 on a Windows or Solaris SPARC system.
NetBackup disaster recovery
---------------------------
The PureDisk NetBackup disaster recovery option allows you to back up your
PureDisk environment to a NetBackup environment. You can back up PureDisk
databases, configuration files, and file data to NetBackup, and you can
restore this data from NetBackup in the event of a disaster.
============================
BUGFIXES AND PRODUCT CHANGES
============================
This maintenance pack implements some product changes and includes bugfixes.
Product changes
---------------
There are now two disaster recovery backup policies, one for a full backup and one
for an incremental backup. The Web UI for specifying a disaster recovery
backup policy that uses third-party backup software is modified slightly.
Some libraries are no longer built with debugging options.
Product fixes
-------------
This maintenance pack includes the following fixes:
- This maintenance pack includes fixes to the start and stop scripts for
PureDisk services.
- The maintenance pack adds locking to scripts that are started from crontab.
This prevents several instances from running in parallel.
- The Windows client now performs Microsoft SQL backups when the log
files and the database files are split across volumes.
- The workflow log files on the Windows client no longer grow until they
consume all available disk space.
- The content routers are accessible more quickly after a PureDisk restart.
- The processing that occurs when you add a metabase engine to a node that
hosts an existing content router is noticeably faster.
- Adding a metabase engine or a content router to a node no longer fails if
your root Web UI password contains special characters.
- This maintenance pack includes enhancements to the sanity check for
replicated data selections.
- The MB Garbage Collection workflow now runs on replicated data selections.
- A security fix prevents SQL injection.
This maintenance pack also includes the following previously released fixes:
- A kick daemon, which enhances the behavior of the workflow daemon.
- Windows Client to interpret the archive bit correctly when
Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is enabled.
- A new version of PDGetLogs and a new tool to compress storage. These tools
are available to Symantec Enterprise Technical Support staff.
=====================
PASSWORD RESTRICTIONS
=====================
PureDisk restricts end-user passwords to 50 characters or less in length.
In addition, PureDisk restricts the end-user passwords for the storage pool
authority Web UI to subset of printable ASCII characters. PureDisk passwords
can contain any character in the range 0x21 (EXCLAMATION MARK) to 0x7e (TILDE),
excluding the following characters:
" quotation mark (0x22)
< less-than sign (0x3c)
> greater than sign (0x3e)
' apostrophe (0x27)
) closing parenthesis (0x29)
} closing curly brace (0x7d)
\ backslash (0x5c)
Tab character (0x09)
Space character (0x20)
====================================
TOPOLOGY FILE ENCRYPTION INFORMATION
====================================
When add_CR_onNode.sh, add_MBE_onNode.sh, and /opt/pdinstall/add_NBU_onNode.sh
complete successfully, the scripts exit and prompt you to encrypt the
topology.ini file. If the script cannot complete successfully, it rolls back
the changes it made, but it exits without prompting you for encryption.
If the script does not prompt you to encrypt the topology.ini file, make sure
to check the topology.ini file. If file /opt/pdinstall/topology.ini appears
in ASCII text on your system, run the following command to encrypt the file:
/opt/pdinstall/enc_topology.ini

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
=====================
1. Use rcp or scp to copy the tar file, NB_PDE_61_MP1A_287416.tar,
to the /root directory of the PureDisk node that hosts the storage pool authority.
2. Log on as root to the node that hosts the storage pool authority.
3. Type cd /root to go to the /root directory.
4. Type the following command to verify the integrity of the maintenance pack:
md5sum /root/NB_PDE_61_MP1A_287416.tar
This command computes the md5 checksum of the maintenance pack file. The md5
checksum of the maintenance pack file must be:
3ef8e05cfaf07e77e8ee1a5be2092d56
If you obtain a different checksum, the maintenance pack was corrupted during
download. Try to download the maintenance pack again.
5. Type the following command to extract the README file:
tar -C / -xf /root/NB_PDE_61_MP1A_287416.tar ./README.txt
=========================
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=========================
1. Make sure that no PureDisk jobs are currently running or are scheduled to be run.
2. Log out from the Web UI.
3. Type the following command to unpack the maintenance pack software:
tar -C / -xf /root/NB_PDE_61_MP1A_287416.tar ./opt
4. Type the following command to run and install the maintenance pack:
/opt/pdinstall/apply-NB_PDE_61_MP1A.sh
If the topology.ini file is encrypted, the software prompts you for the
password to decrypt this file.
The maintenance pack automatically pushes the software to all nodes in the
storage pool and all clients.
At the end of a successful installation, the software prompts you to encrypt
the topology.ini file.
