Backup of Microsoft Exchange Information Store (IS) or the System State to a Backup-to-Disk Folder fails with the error "'-546 The log file sector size does not match the sector size of the current volume." or with "access denied" when the Granular Restore Technology (GRT) feature is enabled

Error

Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-546 The log file sector size does not match the sector size of the current volume. '

Cause

Backup Exec version 11d and later provides users with new functionality for the protection of Exchange Information Store data. After performing an Exchange Information Store (IS) backup to a Backup to Disk location, with the Granular Restore Technology (GRT) feature enabled, the Restore Selections for that job will allow the user to expand the data below the Mailbox Store and Public Folder Store databases to select individual items for restore.

Note:
If the original backup was performed using the GRT feature with the data written directly to a tape device, only the Mailbox Store data will show granular selections, Public Folder Store data will not. This is by design.

In some cases, when the Exchange IS backup with GRT enabled is targeted to a Backup to Disk device the job may fail with the following error:
Backup- \\ExchSrvr\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group
Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: '-546 The log file sector size does not match the sector size of the current volume. '

This error occurs due to a limitation with the JET Database Engine and the hardware being used. On the SCSI/RAID controller volumes that are smaller than 2 TB in size will use a default block size of 512 bytes. On volumes that are larger than 2 TB the default block size will be 4 kilobytes. This is a limitation of the JET database and can not be addressed in the Backup Exec application

This error message will occur when the jet database engine is not able to match up the block size of the drive on which the exchange database(s) resides to:
1. The block size of the Temp Location to which GRT enabled data is staged temporarily.
2. The block size of the backup to disk location

An example of this is below:
If the Exchange database resides on a volume whose block size is 512 bytes, and Backup Exec tries to back that up to a volume that is using 4 kilobyte blocks, the JET database engine cannot line up the database pages correctly.

In Windows, the following command will show the Block Size in the "Bytes Per Sector" detail
Command:   fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:

Solution

Other alternatives in this situation follow:
a). Change the location for Temp staging (from Tools - Options - Backup) to the volume that has the same block size as the source database volume.
b). Use a software RAID over the current hardware RAID for the backup to disk folder location and set the block size to match the same as the source database location.
c). Move the source database to a volume that has the same size blocks as the backup to disk folder being used.
d). Run the Exchange IS backup job to a tape device rather than a backup to disk location, and then duplicate the data to a disk that has the same block size as the source database.

If the granular restore functionality is turned off, the job may succeed. Turning off GRT will not allow you to restore individual mailbox items.

If using Exchange 2003, the legacy mailbox support feature can be enabled in the Tools / Options / Set Application defaults / Job Defaults / Microsoft Exchange settings. This would allow the ability to select for backup and restore individual mailboxes and public folder items from the Exchange database. This is not recommended as this method is much slower and defeats the single instance storage, space saving design of the Exchange database.

Note:
The GRT functionality is enabled by default when Backup Exec 11d and later is installed with the Exchange Agent option. GRT functionality is enabled either in the Tools / Options - Set Application Defaults, Backup Job Properties, or Job Defaults windows by checking the Microsoft Exchange option to Enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store backups.
