DOCUMENTATION: How To manually backup and restore Storage Exec components to enable a product reinstall

Solution

Overview:

Certain issues with Storage Exec may require the product to be removed and reinstalled.  In this situation it would usually be required to backup and restore the Storage Exec components: Policies, Databases for Managed Resources and Reports.  The procedure walks through removing the product and using the clean-up utility to completely remove all traces of Storage Exec from the server and then restoring the backed up data.

Procedure:

1. Save the Policies and Reports as follows

Export the following registry keys to a safe location:

      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Policies
      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Rules
      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Reportset
      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Definitions
      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Groups
      HKLM\Software\Veritas\Storage Exec\5.0\Devices

2. Stop the FileScreenServer and QuotaAdvisor services and set them to manual

3    IF running Storage Exec 5.5:

From the command prompt run these commands:

      FLTMC UNLOAD QAFILTER
      FLTMC UNLOAD FILESCREENFILTER

    IF running Storage Exec 5.3:

Set the following registry entry and then reboot the server

      HKLM\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Services\QAFilter\Start = 4 of type Decimal

4.  If running Storage Exec 5.5:

Rename all VxSEQuotas.md on all managed drives to .old (These can be found inside the folder "System Volume Information", which is a hidden system folder at the root of each volume)

    If running Storage Exec 5.3:

Rename the QaQuotasV4.dat  (These are hidden system files at the root of each volume)

5. Rename all SCSRMQuota folders to SCSRMQuota-OLD (These folders are located at the root of each volume)

6. Uninstall Storage Exec using Add/Remove programs

7. Run the clean up utility (cleansystem.exe) available from Symantec Technical Support

8. Reboot the server

9. Reinstall Storage Exec

10. Stop the Storage Exec services (FileScreenServer and QuotaAdvisor)

11. Unload the Storage Exec drivers:

    IF running Storage Exec 5.5:
From the command prompt run these commands:

      FLTMC UNLOAD QAFILTER
      FLTMC UNLOAD FILESCREENFILTER

    IF running Storage Exec 5.3:

Set the following registry entry and then reboot the server:

      HKLM\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Services\QAFilter\Parameters\Startup = 4 of type Decimal

12. Restore the registry keys that were exported in step 1.

13. If running Storage Exec 5.5:

Rename VxSEQuotas.md and SCSRMQuota folders back to their original names

    If running Storage Exec 5.3:

Rename QaQuotasV4.dat and SCSRMQuota folders back to their original names

14. If running Storage Exec 5.3:

Set the registry entry as follows

      HKLM\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Services\QAFilter\Start = 0 of type Decimal

15.Reboot the server

This should result in the ability to see all managed resources as before and view all policies and reports as before
