STATUS CODE 6: NetBackup Oracle RMAN backups are failing with a NetBackup Status Code 6 (the backup failed to back up the requested files) and an ORA-27028 error message.

Error

the backup failed to back up the requested files

Solution

Overview:
Receiving ORA-27028 and NBU status code 6 when attempting Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) backup.

Troubleshooting:
Enable the dbclient log file from the Oracle server.

Log Files:
The dbclient log file on the Oracle server shows the following message:

<16> openProgressFile: ERR - can't make directory path: </usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs>: 13
<16> CreateNewImage: ERR - openProgressFile() failed
<16> VxBSACreateObject: ERR - Could not create new image with file /bk_10_1_616580548.
<16> xbsa_CreateObject: ERR - VxBSACreateObject: Failed with error:
Server Status:  Communication with the server has not been initiated or the server status has not been retrieved from the serve
<4> sbtend: INF - --- END of SESSION ---

The Oracle UNIX user account used for the backup did not have read/write privileges to the /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/ directory or a subdirectory of that path.

Resolution:
Change the file modes of the following directories to 777 - "chmod 777 <path>" where <path> is:
/usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops
/usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext
/usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs

Read/write/execute permissions by user, group and other for these directories are required for successful user initiated backups including Oracle RMAN backups.
