Cause

This error may be caused by a low or no disk space condition on the drive hosting the Backup Exec (BEDB) Database or by the (BEDB) Database being at the maximum size allowed by the Microsoft SQL instance.  This causes multiple issues such as:

  • BEServer service failing to start
  • Job hung in a "Ready; no idle devices available" status
  • BE Console fails to open
  • Errors when editing selection lists

DATABASE LIMITATIONS:

SQL Versions Express Standard Enterprise Workgroup
2005 4GB No Limit No Limit No Limit
2008 R2 10GB 524TB 524TB 524TB

Solution

1. Free up some drive space.
2. Optimize the size of the database.
3. Remove the job history and alert entries and configure Backup Exec to automatically purge the old data on a regular basis.

* Backup Exec Database Maintenance can be configured to perform the tasks mentioned in step 2 and step 3. Refer to the Related Articles section for additional information.

NOTE: Customers experiencing this issue are encouraged to contact Symantec Technical Support if the Backup Exec BEDB database is 4GB or greater.  New Alerts and Database tasks in Backup Exec 2010 R2 give warnings when the database is approaching the SQL limitation.
