How to run an OFFLINE BACKUP of Backup Destination on a Continuous Protection Server (CPS).

Solution

To run an OFFLINE BACKUP of the Backup Destination residing on a Protection Server in a CPS setup, the CPS services must be stopped prior to running the backup job then restarted upon the backup job's completion.

Create Batch files to stop/start the CPS services and have them execute before and after the backup job. That can be done by incorporating the Batch files in the backup job as part of the "Pre/Post commands" feature in Backup Exec or use Windows Scheduled Tasks to run each Batch file at a scheduled time. Please refer the TechNote articles mentioned at the end of this document for more information on Pre-Post commands.

Please follow the procedure mentioned below to create the Batch files:

1. Open a Notepad file and paste the following into the file:

net stop RepBrokerService

net stop RxRSA

net stop rxWriterSvc

net stop SUIR

net stop RxNoService

net stop RxWRG

net stop RxWebApp

net stop RxRMS

net stop RxASA

net stop VRTSweb

net stop ENL

2. Save the file as "STOP CPS Services.bat" on the root of C:\ or any suitable location.

3.  Open a Notepad file and paste the following into the file:

net start RxRSA

net start rxWriterSvc

net start RxASA

net start SUIR

net start RxRMS

net start ENL

net start RxNoService

net start RxWRG

net start RxWebApp

4. Save the file as "START CPS Services.bat" on the root of C:\ or any suitable location.

net start VRTSweb

net start RepBrokerService

NOTE: Please check for the existence of the above services before setting up the Batch Files. Not every server in a CPS setup has all of those services. Users may need to modify the files depending on what components have been installed on the server. Below are the details as to which services are installed in a CPS setup.

On the Continuous Management Server (CMS) server:

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Broker Service - RepBrokerService (only in CPS 11D and 12.x if Continuous Protection Agent for Exchange has been installed)

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Agent - RxRSA

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Configuration Writer - rxWriterSvc

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Indexing Service - SUIR (only if Indexing component is installed)

Backup Exec Continuous Protection System State Manager - RxNoService

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Web Restore Backend - RxWRG

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Web Restore Frontend - RxWebApp

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Administration Service - RxRMS

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Database - RxASA

Symantec/Veritas Web Server - VRTSweb

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Network Helper - ENL

On the Business/Protection (CPA) server:

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Broker Service - RepBrokerService (only in CPS 11D and 12.x if Continuous Protection Agent for Exchange has been installed)

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Agent - RxRSA

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Configuration Writer - rxWriterSvc

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Indexing Service - SUIR (only if Indexing component is installed)

Backup Exec Continuous Protection System State Manager - RxNoService

Backup Exec Continuous Protection Database - RxASA
