  Conditions

  • RedHat Linux x86_64 architecture
  • VERITAS File System (VxFS) 4.1 GA
  • System has over 32GB memory

  Cause

On a RedHat Linux x86_64 system with over 32GB memory, insmod command does not honour the settings in modprobe's config file and hence stops responding when loading the module.

This issue is tracked via Symantec etrack incident e497595 which is fixed in VxFS 4.1 MP1 and above.

  Answer/Resolution

Workaround

Exit from package installation and manually update line number 44 in /etc/vx/vxfs-startup script from:

From:
  insmod ${mod} >/dev/null 2>&1
to
  insmod ${mod} vxfs_mbuf=3G vxfs_ninode=2097151 >/dev/null 2>&1

Restart the system after modifying the startup script.

Solution

Install VERITAS File System (VxFS) patch  4.1 MP1 or above.
