Starting with Backup Exec 12, the Lotus Notes agent has been provided with a "time out" setting to allow the agent to avoid the appearance of an application hang when the Domino databases fail to respond to a request to open.

A request to open is sent to a Domino database when the user is browsing selections and when the backup job starts.

Time out when browsing selections

If a time out occurs when browsing the backup selections, there will be no Domino databases displayed in the selection window, and it will be necessary to stop and start the Backup Exec Remote Agent to reset the connection to Lotus in order to make further subsequent attempts.

Time out when the backup job starts

If a time out error occurs when the backup job starts, the job will be categorized as failed, displaying the error below, and none of the Domino databases will be included in the backup.
  
"An error was encounter while attempting to browse the contents of database. The Lotus Domino server timed out during an operation. Restart the Backup Exec Remote Agent"
 

The registry key
Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 

The time out value setting can be found at the key below on the Domino server:
 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Domino\Wait Before Timeout

The default value for "Wait Before Timeout" is 10000ms; that's 10000 milliseconds. A milliseconds is one thousandth of a second so 1000 milliseconds (1000ms) is equal to 1 second.

With a default value of 10000ms the equivalent time is 10 seconds.

Troubleshooting

If a time out is being experienced with the default value, it's possible to raise the value of "Wait Before Timeout" in an attempt to provide more time for the Domino database to respond to the open request.
Stop the Backup Exec Remote Agent, raise the value of "Wait Before Timeout" and then start the Backup Exec Remote Agent. When determining a value for which to raise the Timeout, attempt changes in increments of 1000. For example, start with 11000, if that fails try 12000; continue on until the value has been raised to a level that is successful or it is determined that Lotus is not going to respond to the open request.

If it is determined that Lotus not going to respond to the open request, then the investigate the consistency of the Domino databases and contact Lotus Support for additional help on determining why Lotus is not responding to the open request.
