DOCUMENTATION: How to perform individual file and raw partition restores with Flashbackup-Windows backups with NetBackup.

Solution

How to restore an entire partition from a FlashBackup-Windows backup via the Windows GUI:

1. Open Backup Archive and Restore. Ensure that 'Specify Netbackup Machines and Policy Type' has the 'Source Clients/Policy Type' as client and backup, and that 'Flashbackup-Windows' is selected under 'Policy Type'.

2. From the 'Select for Restore' button, use the drop down menu and choose 'Restore from RAW Partition backup'.

3. Select the RAW partition from the Contents pane, i.e.. \\.\I:

4. From the Actions menu, choose 'Start Restore of Marked Files'. Select the 3rd option, 'Restore individual folders and files to different locations' and then in the window below, double-click on the line with the source path, and now change the destination path to the alternate drive letter, but specify the RAW drive format, i.e.. \\.\K:

NOTE: The destination drive should not be formatted with an NTFS file system before starting the restore. The disk should be assigned a drive letter but not formatted.

5. Select at the bottom, 'Overwrite existing files'

6. Start the restore.

Note: The alternate location's raw partition must be exactly the same size or larger as the original. (If you make the destination partition size larger, following the restore you will see that the partition size will revert to the exact size of the backed up partition. This is normal and intended functionality when you are restoring an entire partition image.  Also note that there must be no open file handles on the destination partition, a way to ensure this is to first format the destination partition or perform a reboot if this is not feasible.

How to restore individual files from a FlashBackup-Windows backup via the Windows GUI:

1. Open Backup Archive and Restore. Ensure that 'Specify Netbackup Machines and Policy Type' has the 'Source Clients/Policy Type' as the client and backup, and 'Flashbackup-Windows' is selected under 'Policy Type'.

2. From the Select for Restore button, use the drop down menu and choose 'Restore from Normal Backup'.

3. Make your individual file selection(s), from the Actions menu, choose 'Start Restore of Marked Files'. And make whatever selections are appropriate for the restore (restore to original location, restore everything to a different location, etc)

Note: Individual file restore from a raw FlashBackup backup will perform much more slowly than a restore of the entire partition, and the performance decreases exponentially the more individual files that are selected for restore. One way to increase performance is to configure the 'Maximum fragment size' on the Storage Unit to a small size such as 1GB or even 500MB (prior to the backups of course).
