Problem
Troubleshooting Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) installation
Solution
The following are some of the most common problems that can be encountered while installing BESR:
- Locating required system information
- Drive letter changes
- Installing Microsoft .NET Framework
- Manually installing and registering services
Locating the required system information
System information can be obtained directly from Windows. This information can be used to specify an IP address, drivers, and so forth while installing the Symantec product or setting up the recovery environment.
To locate required system information:
1. In the Windows Start menu, click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.
2. Use the tree panel area to select the information group to be viewed or printed.
Drive letter changes
If the drive letter of the CD drive has changed since the product is installed, an error occurs (the MSI file cannot be found) when running the Repair or Modify Installation Option from the BESR CD. This error typically occurs if you add or remove external devices to a desktop computer or if you add or remove internal devices to a laptop. To avoid this issue, ensure that the drive letter of the CD drive is the same as when BESR is installed.
About Microsoft .NET Framework
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is required to run BESR. If you have an earlier version of .NET Framework, the BESR installation upgrades the older version to the required 2.0 version.
For more information about resolving a installation problem, check the Symantec Web site or contact Technical Support.
Manually installing and registering services
Sometimes the services do not register correctly when installing the product. Please follow steps in the following technote to register the services using FixInstall.bat:
