How to migrate a Backup Exec Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO) Media Server to another Server with a different name.

Solution

The following steps must be followed when moving the Backup Exec DLO Media Server to another server with a different name.  The servers have to be running the same version of Backup Exec and DLO.  If the old server has an older version of Backup Exec installed it must be upgraded first.

NOTE: Prior to following these steps, the server, database and all user files from the Network User Data Folder (NUDF) should be protected.  These steps or for migrating the DLO installation to another server, not Backup Exec. Please see related Documents on how to migrate a Backup Exec installation.

1) On the New Server Install DLO.
2) Disable all Computers from being backed up from within the DLO Console .
  • Open the DLO Console.
  • Under Setup, choose Computers.
  • Highlight all Computers, right click and choose disable.

3) On the Old Server use service control manager to shutdown MSSQL$BKUPEXECDLO (If this was upgraded from 10x)   OR

MSSQL $BKUPEXEC (SQL Server (BKUPEXEC)) if this is a clean install of 11.x or higher.

4) On the New Server use service control manager to shutdown MSSQL$BKUPEXEC (SQL Server (BKUPEXEC))

5) Copy BE_DLO.mdf and BE_DLO_log.LDF in X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data from old server into same directory on new server.

6) On the Old Server use service control manager to start MSSQL$BKUPEXECDLO (If this was upgraded from 10x) or MSSQL$BKUPEXEC (SQL Server (BKUPEXEC)) and to start the Backup Exec DLO Administration Service.

7) On the New Server use service control manager to start MSSQL$BKUPEXEC and to start the Backup Exec DLO Administration service.

8) Upgrade all the DLO Clients to the current version by following this TechNote:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH51042

9) Create a new Storage Location on the new DLO Media Server

10) On the new DLO Media Server, go into the Setup/Users View, highlight all users, right click and choose "Move Network User Data  Folder".   Select the new Storage Location created in Step 9 and click the Start button.

Note: The Storage Location on the old Server needs to be available for this migration of data to succeed.

11) Use the following command line utility on the old server to move all clients to the new media server. The DLOCommandu.exe utility is found in the Backup Exec DLO folder on the drive and location where it is installed.

From the command line on the old server, change to the Backup Exec DLO directory. (Ex. C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\DLO)
Type the below mentioned Command in the command prompt: DLOCommandu -ChangeServer -M <media server> -A

12) When the move is complete, verify that Restores and Backup work.

13) Modify the Automated User Assignments to use the new Storage Location.

The new server is now ready to protect the DLO Clients. It is recommended to test a restore to insure previously backed up data restores properly
