How to redetect tape drives and autoloaders in Backup Exec.

Solution

Occasionally, it may be necessary to redetect the tape drive or autoloader (i.e.: Robotic Library) in  Backup Exec.  To redetect the devices, perform the following steps:

1. From the Devices tab, right-click the storage device to delete, and then select Properties

2. Select the Configuration tab (Figure 1)

Figure 1

3. Clear the Enable Device for Backup Exec check box (Figure 1), and click OK

4. From the Devices tab, right-click the storage device to delete, and then select Delete

5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each storage device to delete

6. Quit Backup Exec

7. Stop and restart all the Backup Exec services

8. From Backup Exec, select Tools | Wizards | Device Configuration Wizard and configure the storage devices

For autoloader deletion, do the following:

1. From the Devices tab, right-click on the lowest child device under the changer (these are the tape drives of the loader) and select Properties

2. Select the Configuration tab

3. Clear the Enable Device for Backup Exec check box, and click OK

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for all other child devices

Note:  The above steps will not work on slots, repeat the steps again for the loader itself.

All devices should now be disabled (Figure 2):

5. Starting from the lowest child device, right-click each device and delete it
