How to manually install Management Control for Backup Exec System Recovery Manager (BESRM)

Solution

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1. Gathering information for the install

Certificate

Copy from the BESRM server the following files to the destination machine:

C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Manager\Services\tomcat\keystore\Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Manager Cert.cer

C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Manager\Services\tomcat\webapps\axis\depot\oneclickinstaller\certimport.exe

Passcode from a working Management Control installation

A. In the registry browse to the following location (replace <version> with the Management Control version installed):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery Manager\<version>\Publisher

B. Copy the value from the following string key:

EPC=<Value>

2. Registering information on the client :
Certificate

Run the following command in a command window to register the certificate :

CertImport.exe "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Manager Cert.cer"

The Certimport tool will create a log file called CertImport.log in the same folder. Check that the last line is returning with a retval of 0.

Passcode

A. In the registry browse to or create the following location (replace <version> with the Management Control version of the system the EPC value was taken from):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery Manager\<version>\Publisher

B. Create the string key with the value of the passcode you retrieved previously

EPC=<Value>

3. Installation of the Management Control on the client:

From the BESRM installation CDROM, launch the following command from the "Publisher" folder :

msiexec.exe /i "Management Control.msi" address=https://%1:%2

Where %1 is the Netbios name or the IP address of the server, and %2 is the port of the BESRM service (8443 by default)

The system should appear in the Console.
