Backup jobs fail with the error "Final error: 0xe00084eb - The storage device was reset."
Error
Final error: 0xe00084eb - The storage device was reset.
UMI Code: V-79-57344-34027
Cause
These errors usually occur when the SCSI bus resets itself, or the tape drive does not respond in a timely fashion.
Solution
When the backup fails with the above error, to confirm the SCSI bus reset, check the Event viewer for Event IDs 9, 57665, or other similar errors. These Event IDs signify SCSI bus timeouts.
To resolve the issue, ensure that:
1. The tape drive drivers are updated to the latest Symantec drivers. For information about downloading and installing the latest Symantec drivers, please see the following document:

Event ID 9 can be resolved sometimes by:
- Slowing down the SCSI bus.
- Loading the latest SCSI drivers and firmware
- In certain high end servers, moving the SCSI card to a different Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot, one that does not share the same bus as a RAID controller, has been known to fix these errors.
If neither of these help resolve the issue, please contact the Hardware manufacturer.
