Cause

The above error can come while backing up the exchange 2003 or exchange 2007.

Backup Exec version 11.x and above has the capability to perform snapshot backups. The Exchange Agent only supports storage group level snapshots; if individual databases are selected for snapshot backups, then the job fails. In case of exchange 2007 it will always be a snapshot backup of exchange. With Exchange 2007 all backups are required to use VSS to backup the Storage Groups. This is dictated by Microsoft, not Symantec. So when a backup is requested of Exchange 2007 a call is made to VSS to take a snapshot of the entire storage group. At this time VSS can only snap the entire Storage Groups and not the individual databases.

In Exchange 2007 Microsoft recommends to use one database for each storage group. However the standard license for Exchange 2007 enables you to create up to a five storage groups and to mount up to five databases. The enterprise license for Exchange 2007 enables you to you can create up to 50 storage groups and mount up to 50 databases.

Solution

Perform either of the following:
  • If a snapshot backup of the Exchange database is intended, select the entire storage group for backup. Or
  • In case of Exchange 2003, back up the Exchange server in a separate job without using Advanced Open File Option (AOFO).
  • If it is Exchange 2007 then Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) doesn't matter as it will always be a snapshot backup. In Exchange 2007 the entire storage group has to be backed up.
