Problem
How to Modify PCAnywhere Thin Host Properties for Symantec LiveState Recovery Lights Out Option
Solution
Solution:
There is only one supported method of modifying a thin host and this is through the use of a licensed copy of PCAnywhere. This requires a two step process: Creating a host and then copying it to the Ramdrive of the Lights Out Machine.
To create a thin host for initial use:
2. In the right pane, under Quick Deploy and Connect, double-click the desired host computer to connect to. This opens the Thin Host Configuration Wizard, which guides the user through the setup process.
3. In the Thin Host Configuration Wizard, read the information on the first panel, then click Next.
4. In the Host Name box, type the name for the host to be used.
5. Select the desired type of encryption (PCAnywhere encoding or Symmetric,)
6. Under Authentication type, select one of the following: PCAnywhere Authentication, NT Authentication, or Microsoft LDAP. Other options can be set at this time as well if desired.
7. Type the login credentials to be used to validate connections to the host computer.
8. Click Next, and select the option to export these settings to a file that can be used for later deployment, then select Save to Disk.
9. Click Finish. The thin host configuration wizard will create a self-extracting executable file containing all of the files required for the thin host.
10. Extract the files into a directory on either a network share or removable media.
To copy the thin host to the ram drive of the Lights Out computer:
This can only be done during the Lights Out installation if the thin host files are available. Thin Host files must be copied before the Lights Outs installation is completed.
- 1. Begin the installation of Symantec LiveState Recovery Lights Out Option and allow it to begin copying files.
Lights Out creates a Ramdrive and copies all Recovery Environment files to this Ramdrive. At the end of the file copy process, a small window appears indicating that the installation has completed. DO NOT CLICK "OK" at this point. This will dismount the Ramdrive.
2. Open Windows Explorer and locate the RAMDRIVE B: volume.
3. Copy the PCAnywhere Thin Host files into the \\i386\shell\PCA folder on the ramdrive.
4. Switch back to the Lights Out Recovery installation message and Click "OK".
