How to use the Symantec Recovery Disk to check a drive for errors

Solution

The Symantec Recovery Disk includes utilities that can be used to fix errors or recover files of a drive, which is not starting in Windows.

To Check the File System of a disk
1. Start the system with the Symantec Recovery Disk CD.
2. Press the F6 key if additional RAID drivers are required.
3. In the Symantec Recovery environment using the left hand menu options, select Analyze.
4. Select the option, Check Hard Disks for Errors.
5. Select the drive letter of the drive to be scanned.
6. Select additional options as necessary. Most file structure issues require the Automatically fix file system errors, and the Find and correct bad sectors options.

CAUTION: Options selected here do perform writes to the selected drive that can potentially erase data. Be sure to have the backup of all the important data from the selected drive before running this utility. If data on the selected drive is not backed up, click the close button and backup the data before running the utility.

7. Click the Start button.

CAUTION: Once the utility has begun to check the drive, it can not be canceled. Interrupting the utility before allowing it to finish may result in data loss on the drive.

8. If errors are found, note the text of the error message and re-run the utility until it runs without reporting any fixes or updates. If the utility reports an error it is unable to fix, make a note of the error text and contact the manufacturer of the drive or computer for further assistance.

To copy the error report to a file
1. Use the mouse pointer to click within the box below the progress indicator and highlight the scan results. Right-click the highlighted text and select Copy.
2. Move the mouse pointer over the blue area in the upper left corner. Left click once the pointer changes to a finger. This will open a command prompt window.
3. Type notepad and press Enter
4. Select EditPaste.
5. When the text of the error has been copied into Notepad, click File > Save and save the text file to a local floppy disk or network share.

To browse a file structure of a disk
1. Start the system with the Symantec Recovery Disk CD.
2. Press the F6 key if additional RAID drivers are required.
3. Click Explore My Computer. The Recovery Point Browser interface opens.
4. In the left pane, double-click My Computer to expand it.
5. Double-clicking a folder will expand its sub folders. File contents of folders will appear in the right pane when the folder is highlighted. Files may be deleted or copied to another location from this interface.
