Problem

The system may fail to boot into windows after the restore of an image to a blank hard disk using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery.

Solution

Windows fails to start after restoring an image to a blank hard disk on the same system using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery.

LiveState Recovery (LSR) 3.0 appears to be fine. If the restore is performed to the existing system/partitions, it works fine. When restored to a blank hard disk, the boot.ini settings will be changed to boot from the second partition, instead of the first partition.

Solution:

To resolve the issue perform the following:

1. After the restore of the recovery point, do NOT restart.
2. Go to Recover > Recover files.
3. Then open the recovery point and select boot.ini from the root of the drive.
4. Then right-click and select Recover and replace this file with the one restored previously.
5. This will fix the boot.ini and the system can now boot up.
