A Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) backup job of an encrypted file with file and folder backup fails with the error "Error E7D1001D: Unable to open //./SymantecSnapshot0/encrypt/"

Error

Error E7D1001D: Unable to open

Solution

Backup Exec System Recovery is unable to backup files and folders that are encrypted using the file and folder backup option. The following errors are generated while backing up an encrypted file with file and folder backup: (Figure 1)

Figure 1

Workaround #1:

Perform volume-level backups of the volume(s) that contain encrypted files. The encrypted files can then be restored by mounting the recovery point (right-click recovery point file and choose mount option) and then copying the relevant files via windows explorer.

NOTE: Encrypted files cannot be restored using the Recovery Point Browser.

Workaround #2:

Edit the file properties of the encrypted file specified in the error and disable the encryption:

1. Right-click an encrypted file, click Properties, click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
2. Deselect the option Encrypt contents to secure data.
3. Backup/restores should now be successful.
