I. INTRODUCTION
================
There is a problem with the NetBackup upgrade process when upgrading (from
NetBackup 5.x to NetBackup 6.5) in a NetBackup cluster environment that
results in the EMM database being created in /usr/openv, rather than on the
shared disk. To determine if this issue affects you, refer to
TechNote 293034, found below in the Related Documents section.
If you have determined that this issue affects you, and you have not
performed an upgrade yet, you can prevent the problem by running a modified
upgrade procedure to install this patch described in the INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS section below.
If, however, you have already performed the upgrade and have run the
"nbpushdata -add" command, or the system has run for any length of time on
the first (initially active) node, contact Symantec Technical Services for
further assistance and do not install this package.
=========================
II. DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
=========================
1) Download the NB_6.5I1_<6 digit number>.tar file into the
/tmp directory, on each node of the cluster that you are upgrading.
- where <6 digit number> is an internal tracking identifier
2) Extract the NB_6.5I1_<6 digit number>.tar files.
tar xvf NB_6.5I1_<6 digit number>.tar to each node of the cluster
that you are upgrading.
NB_6.5I1 will create the files:
VrtsNB_6.5I1.README

III. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
==============================
Before installing this Independent patch, please review the following items:
- Symantec recommends that you perform catalog backups before and after you
apply this patch.
- If you are planning to install this Independent patch as a part of an
upgrade from a 5.x release then it is important that you understand that
the existing NetBackup databases must be in a consistent state prior to
beginning the upgrade. Information and tools to assist you in determining
the current state of your database, as well as instructions to help you
address any inconsistencies that you might discover can be viewed on the
NetBackup Upgrade Portal, a part of the Symantec NetBackup Support Web site.
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/overview.jsp?pid=15143
- If you are upgrading from 5.x to 6.5, you must install this Independent
patch at a specific time during the upgrade process or the upgrade may fail.
This is described in detail in the following Modified upgrade procedure.
Modified upgrade procedure
--------------------------
Perform the following to upgrade to NetBackup 6.5 from NetBackup 5.x.
1. Ensure that you have the 6.5I1 package that you downloaded from the NetBackup
Support Web site extracted to each node in the cluster. This package consists
of a modified version of the following script:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/cluster/cluster_upgrade.
2. Begin your upgrade on the first inactive node in accordance with the
directions documented in the NetBackup Installation Guide and the High
Availability (HA) Guide, with the following additional step:
- During the upgrade, when you see the following prompt, DO NOT respond to
the question.
"Do you want to continue the installation with the current active
NetBackup license key"
3. Open a second window on the node that is being upgraded and replace the
cluster_upgrade script with the 6.5I1 version of the file that is included
with this package, for example:
# mv /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/cluster/cluster_upgrade /usr/openv/netbackup/
bin/cluster/cluster_upgrade.SAVE
# cp /tmp/cluster_upgrade /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/cluster/cluster_upgrade
4. Ensure the cluster_upgrade script has execute permissions set, for example:
# chmod 555 /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/cluster/cluster_upgrade
5. Return to the first window and respond to the license key prompt and
proceed with the upgrade process of the node as normal.
6. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 for any remaining inactive nodes and then perform
the steps one more time for the active node.
NOTE: It is important that the active node be done last.
7. After you have finished the upgrade on the active node, you can perform the
following to verify that the EMM database has been created in the correct
location.
a. View the contents of /usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf
b. If the VXDBMS_NB_DATA parameter exists in the bp.conf file, then you
are on the EMM server.
c. If VXDBMS_NB_DATA is set, then your upgrade has been successful if
this parameter points to a shared disk data directory similar to the
following:
VXDBMS_NB_DATA = <shared_disk_mount>/db/data
NOTE: If the VXDBMS_NB_DATA parameter in bp.conf indicates a path other
than a shared path (for example, /usr/openv/db/data), then the
upgrade was performed incorrectly and you should contact Symantec
Technical Services.
8. Continue with the remainder of the upgrade process as documented in the
NetBackup Installation Guide and the High Availability Guide.
