Issue

Unable to add a File System Archiving (FSA) volume. Getting error: 'Failed to save or update details for volume '%1. Could not add the volume to the list of managed resources. The parameter is incorrect.'

Error

Failed to save or update details for volume '%1'. Could not add the volume to the list of managed resources. The parameter is incorrect.

Solution

This can occur in the following scenarios.

Scenario 1

This will occur if Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is not enabled on the Enterprise Vault server.  DCOM must be enabled on the Enterprise Vault server in order to add an FSA volume.

Solution
Clustered Enterprise Vault Server
To determine if DCOM is enabled a Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) resource must be added to the Enterprise Vault resource group.  Once the resource is added perform the following steps.

1. Bring the DTC resource online.

2. Go to Administrative tools, Component Services on the active node.

3. Navigate to the My Computer object.

4. Right-click on My Computer and click Properties.

5. Click on the Default Properties tab and put a check mark in "Enable distributed COM on this machine" and click Apply.

6. Restart all Enterprise Vault services and restart the Enterprise Vault Administration Console and attempt to add the volume again.

Note:  The DTC resource can be removed from the Enterprise Vault resource group once DCOM has been enabled.

Non-clustered Enterprise Vault Server

1. Go to Administrative Tools then Component Services.

2. Navigate to the My Computer object.

3. Right-click on My Computer and click Properties.

4. Click on the Default Properties tab and put a check mark in "Enable distributed COM on this machine" and click Apply.

5. Restart all Enterprise Vault services and restart the Enterprise Vault Administration Console and attempt to add the volume again.

Scenario 2
The Remote Registry service is in a stopped state.

Start the Remote Registry service on the file server.

If issue persists then refer to the following Microsoft Article to determine if this is a cause for the error.    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926642

An indication of this above issue can be seen in a DTrace of the FileScreenService process on the file server when attempting to add the volume.

(FileScreenService) <22696> EV:M LocalPathFromShareName :  NetShareGetInfo() failed, with Error code - 1.

(FileScreenService) <22696> EV:L LocalPathFromUNC :  LocalPathFromShareName() failed, with Error code 0x80070005.

Scenario 3

The FileScreenFilter driver is not loaded.

Verification

Using the fltmc command line command, check for the FileScreenFilter instance.  If it is not present, follow the solution below:

1. Stop the Enterprise Vault File Blocking Service.

2. Go to a command prompt and load the FileScreenFilter driver if it did not appear in the fltmc output.

fltmc load filescreenfilter

3. Start the Enterprise Vault File Blocking Service

4.  Once the service is restarted attempt the operation again to verify the issue no longer occurs.   If issue persists, please uninstall and reinstall the FSA Agent as this is likely a sign of a problem within the File Blocking Service's filter driver.

An indication of this above issue can be seen in a DTrace of the FileScreenService process on the file server when attempting to add the volume

(FileScreenService) <####> EV:L FSScan : Sending request to FileScreen Filter Driver for registry Scan.

  (FileScreenService) <####> EV:M FSScan :  DeviceIoControl() failed, with Error code - 87.
