Problem
GENERAL ERROR: Due to excessive PERC errors logged in /var/log/messages, the root partition is filling on the PureDisk server.
Solution
Overview:
Due to repeated logging of PERC (PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller) errors to the /var/log/messages file, the root partition may quickly fill to 100%, causing failures.
An example of this message:
linux kernel: FAILED
linux kernel: status = 1, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 08
linux kernel: <6>sd: Current: sense key: Illegal Request
linux kernel: Additional sense: Invalid command operation code
Troubleshooting:
The output of tail -f /var/log/messages can be monitored for these messages.
Resolution:
This issue has been resolved in other cases by updating the PERC drivers from the Dell web site.
The proper drivers should be installed and can be determined by looking at the information in the file /etc/SuSE-release.
Note: The PERC card should be set to use Write back cache. Write through cache should not be used as substantial performance issues seen when using this configuration.
