Problem
Backup Exec for Windows Servers generates the alert "RSM database is corrupt"
Solution
Prior to installing Backup Exec on a machine, the Removable Storage Service (RSM) should be stopped and disabled. If the RSM service is not disabled then Windows will attempt to control the tape hardware and a conflict will occur with Backup Exec's drivers which causes the above alert in the Event Logs.
As Backup Exec also polls the Windows Event Logs for alerts of this nature, the alert will be replicated into the Backup Exec console (in the Alerts tab). This alert should only be replicated to the Backup Exec console the first time that a specific entry has been detected in the event logs, however, on some servers it has been seen that the alerts inside the Backup Exec console continue to be generated even though RSM has been disabled.
To resolve the alert after Backup Exec has been installed on a machine, perform the following steps on the affected media server:
Note: In a CASO environment one of the MMS servers might be responsible for generating the alerts even though they are visible on the CAS server.
1. Stop and disable the Removable Storage Service in the Windows Services Applet (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services).
2. Restart the Backup Exec Services and check for the alert in both Windows Event Viewer and the Backup Exec Console.
3. If the alert is no longer being generated in the Event Viewer, but is still generated in the Backup Exec Console, then use the Event Viewer to "Clear all Events" from the Application and System Event logs and restart the Backup Exec services again.
4. If the above steps do not solve the issue continue with the remaining steps below
5. Shut the server all the way down. If the tape hardware is external, cycle power to it until the tape drive(s) and/or library are at an online ready state. Boot the server.
6. Install the latest device driver update for Backup Exec per the following links:

How to install and uninstall Tape Device Drivers using Tapeinst.exe utility:

7. Reboot the machine and check both the event logs and the Backup Exec Console for the alerts.
