Issue

"Error EBAB0013: A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly" occurs when backing up to an external drive

Error

Error EBAB0013: A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly. CHECK failed, Can::GetSafeFrameFileOffset: .\Can.cpp(306): offset != INVALID_FRAME_INDEX.

Cause

This issue may occur in Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) when using an external drive that is formatted with the FAT32 file system. On a FAT32 system, the maximum size of any file is limited to 4 GB.  However, BESR attempts to create the image by breaking up the recovery point into separate 4 GB files.

Solution

(It is recommended that a successful full backup be performed before continuing. Symantec is not responsible for any data loss, accidental or incidental.)

  • Convert the drive to the NTFS file system. Run the backup job again so the resulting recovery point is contained in a single file.

For instructions on converting an existing volume to NTFS without affecting the existing data on the drive, go to:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881
