On a MMS server you receive the following error when you try to start the Device and Media service: "ERROR_DATABASE_DOES_NOT_EXIST"

Error

ERROR_DATABASE_DOES_NOT_EXIST.

When you check back through the operating system Application event log, you may find an error similar to this:

Adamm Database Event: Open Database Connection Failed!
Error = ERROR_DATABASE_DOES_NOT_EXIST
Server = "SERVER2"
Active Node = ""
Instance = "BKUPEXEC"
Database = "BEDB"
Connection String = "DRIVER=SQL Server;SERVER=SERVER1\BKUPEXEC;DATABASE=BEDB;App=BEWS PVL"
The Backup Exec Device and Media Service service could not connect to the database specified. Make sure that the specified database is running, and then try starting the service again.

Cause

From Backup Exec 11d and higher, the Backup Exec Database (BEDB) resides in a Microsoft 2005 Express Edition SQL instance. New to SQL Server 2005 is the SQL Server Browser service.

On occasion, it has been found that the SQL Server Browser service may be disabled by an Administrator. Typically this is to prevent the service from ever running, or to prevent the service from starting after a restart.

Solution

Change the SQL Server Browser service on the Central Administration Server (CAS) to automatic, and then start the service manually.
  • Open services.msc
  • Locate the SQL Server Browser Service
  • Right click and select Properties
  • Change the Startup type to Automatic
  • Click Start

What is the SQL Server Browser service?
The SQL Server Browser program runs as a Windows service. SQL Server Browser listens for incoming requests for Microsoft SQL Server resources and provides information about SQL Server instances installed on the computer. SQL Server Browser contributes to the following actions:
  • Browsing a list of available servers
  • Connecting to the correct server instance
