Issue

SharePoint GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) backup to disk or restore from tape of data causes job to fail with Remote Agent connection error

Error

The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled.

Solution

When backing up SharePoint content databases to disk with the Backup Exec for Windows Servers SharePoint agent the backup completes but may fail with error:

The connection to target system has been lost. Backup set canceled.

A backup to tape of the same SharePoint content database resource is successful, however, attempting to restore a GRT document from tape gives a similar error on completion of staging the database:

Final error: 0xe000846a - The resource could not be restored because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.

This issue seems to occur once the SharePoint content database resides on the Backup Exec media server hard drive and an attempt is made to open it.  This occurs during both the backup to disk process and the restore from tape process.  Debugging the Remote Agent process on the Backup Exec media server will show the following error when the database is opened:

BEREMOTE: [02/06/08 15:52:37] [3192] ERROR: CreateBSD: Couldn't find Default Web Site\Content-DB 1 (SQL1\WSS_Content)
BEREMOTE: [02/06/08 15:52:37] [3192] startRestore: CreateBSD() failed!

Workaround:

In situations where this issue occurs and backups are going to a Backup to Disk location, GRT should be disabled by changing the setting with the backup job properties to uncheck 'Enable the restore of individual documents from the database backup' under the 'Microsoft Sharepoint' properties, see Figure 1.

Resolution:

This issue has been resolved with Backup Exec for Windows Servers version 12.5
